Until I stopped smoking I used to hate the gym. I had been a member for a few years but went through phases of going regularly and then not going for a few months. I was happy to go to a class but there is no way I would have gone and tried to carry out my own session. Not with all those fit people there who I was convinced would judge me. After getting engaged I decided I needed to make a real change and get fit, I didn’t want to wait until last minute. I decided to get a personal trainer and I think it was the best thing I could do.
The reason I hated the gym was because I didn’t actually know what to do when I got there! And thinking that people there judge you couldn’t be more wrong. After a few sessions I realised that people actually couldn’t care less! Everyone is there to do their own workout and pay minimal attention to the person next to them. It’s all about confidence and I think that’s why it’s great to get a personal trainer to show you how to use the equipment and give you some ideas. When I first started out I got lots of ideas from Instagram and Facebook which I then tried out and figured out what I enjoyed. Classes are great for getting you started and increasing your fitness but spending time at the gym is great too. Start out on the cardio machines and the resistance machines. Don’t be afraid to ask for guidance from the staff at the gym who will be more than happy to help you and give you some tips. If you do have the time and the money it is certainly worth investing in some personal training sessions to make sure you do things correctly, get the most out of your training and, above all, avoid injury.
The main thing is to give it a try. There are always a thousand excuses but at the end of the day that’s all they are, excuses! Don’t be scared to make a change, everyone has to start somewhere!
